Travertine in Ahmedabad The quiet warmth of travertine
Linear, softly banded stone in white, beige, silver, gold and chocolate tones — the calm, natural surface behind many of today’s most refined interiors.
What is travertine?
Travertine is a natural limestone formed around mineral springs. As the water evaporated, layers of calcite built up over thousands of years, leaving the gentle bands and small natural pores that give travertine its relaxed, organic character. Cut along the layers (vein-cut) it shows long, linear stripes; cut across them (cross-cut) it shows a softer, cloudy pattern.
That texture is exactly why architects keep returning to it. Travertine brings warmth to minimalist spaces, works beautifully with wood, linen, brass and black metal, and suits both contemporary Ahmedabad homes and classic villas. At Stonedge we supply white, beige, silver-grey, gold, Doretto and chocolate travertine, along with Travonyx, a travertine with onyx-like translucency.
Filled, honed or polished?
The natural pores in travertine are usually filled with a matching resin or cement before polishing, giving a smooth surface that is easy to clean. Honed and brushed finishes show more of the stone’s character and are popular for floors, bathrooms and exteriors because they are less slippery. For outdoor and pool areas we recommend an unfilled, tumbled or brushed finish.

Applications
Where travertine works best
- Feature walls and TV walls — vein-cut travertine laid in long horizontal panels is one of the most elegant wall finishes available.
- Bathrooms — walls, vanity tops and honed floors give a calm, spa-like feel.
- Living room and foyer floors in large formats, filled and honed for an easy-care surface.
- Staircases and kitchen islands, often with mitred edges so the bands wrap around the corner.
- Façades, courtyards and pool decks in brushed or tumbled finishes.
Price & care
Price factors and care
Travertine price depends on colour and grade (consistent vein-cut silver and white travertines sit at the top of the range), slab size, thickness and finish. Like marble, it is a calcium-based stone, so acidic spills such as lemon juice can dull a polished surface. Seal after installation, wipe spills quickly and clean with pH-neutral products. Honed finishes hide wear well and can be refreshed on site.

Travertine questions
Is travertine good for flooring?
Yes. Filled and honed travertine makes a durable, warm floor for living areas and bathrooms. For outdoor areas choose a brushed or tumbled finish for better grip.
What is the difference between vein-cut and cross-cut travertine?
Vein-cut is sliced along the natural layers and shows long linear bands; cross-cut is sliced across the layers and shows a softer, cloudy pattern.
Does travertine need sealing?
Yes. Seal after installation and periodically after that. Sealing helps resist stains; it does not stop acids from etching a polished surface, so wipe spills promptly.
Can I see travertine slabs in Ahmedabad?
