Journal · Stone guide Buying Marble in Ahmedabad: A Checklist Before You Visit a Dealer

Quantities, slab inspection, lots, thickness, quotes and installation: what to check before you buy marble.

Marble is usually bought once for a home and lived with for decades, so a little preparation before you visit a marble dealer saves money and disappointment. This is the checklist we give homeowners, architects and builders across Ahmedabad.

Before you visit a dealer

  • Bring your floor plan or drawings with room sizes, plus photos of the space if it is built.
  • Decide which areas get marble: living, dining, bedrooms, stairs, bathrooms, feature walls.
  • Have a rough budget range in mind, so the dealer can show options that fit it.
  • Note the look you like: white or beige, strong or soft veining, polished or matt.

Working out quantity

Marble is sold by area, and you will lose some stone to cutting, pattern matching and breakage. Add a wastage allowance on top of your measured area, more for book-matched walls and complex layouts, and buy everything from the same lot at once. Ask the dealer to calculate the slab count from your drawing, not just a square-foot figure.

Inspecting slabs

  1. See full slabs in good daylight, not just small samples or photos.
  2. Look at the whole face for cracks, filled pits and patches you do not like.
  3. Check the back for mesh or resin reinforcement and ask why it is there.
  4. Run a hand across the polish: it should feel even, without waves.
  5. For book-matched walls, check that consecutive slabs are numbered and kept together.

Lots and consistency

Natural marble varies between blocks. For a whole home, insist that all slabs come from one lot so the colour and veining stay consistent from room to room. Mark or photograph the slabs you select so the same slabs are cut and delivered.

Thickness and finish

Floors and walls typically use 16–18 mm marble, while countertops, stairs and exteriors are usually 20 mm or thicker. The finish changes both look and maintenance: polished shows the colour best, honed is softer and less slippery, and leather or brushed finishes add texture. Read our guide to marble finishes.

Comparing quotes

Two quotes with the same price per square foot can be very different jobs. Check whether each one includes cutting, edge work, book-matching, transport, loading, laying, grouting and polishing, and what thickness and grade it assumes. A detailed quote protects both you and the dealer.

Delivery and installation

Ask who will deliver and who will lay the stone. Marble needs careful handling, a level base and the right adhesive or mortar; many problems blamed on the stone come from installation. A dealer with its own workshop and installation team, like Stonedge, takes responsibility from selection to handover.

After installation

Seal the marble once installed, clean with pH-neutral products and wipe acidic spills quickly. Worn or dull floors can be re-polished on site after a few years.
